Frequently Asked Questions About Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient method of accessing the body's vital energy at consistent and predictable points along pathways called meridians. An acupuncturist may use needles, cupping, acupressure or massage, tuning forks, moxa, guasha, electro stimulation or moxa to either stimulate or drain energy from these points.

How is it done?

Acupuncture is performed with very thin, sterile DISPOSIBLE needles that are inserted only a few millimeters. The needles are not like hypodermic needles, which are thicker, hollow, and inserted more deeply.

Who will treat me?

The licensed acupuncturist, Maggie Garrett, is the only person who will plan treatments and insert needles.

What is a treatment like?

All treatments are not the same, but usually you and the acupuncturist will begin by discussing your condition. Your blood pressure will be measured, your tongue examined and your pulses taken. Next, you'll probably lie on a table like a massage table and the needles will be inserted. Then you'll relax while the needles do their work. Add a little soft music, maybe a heat lamp and you'll feel great.

Does it hurt?

Gentle needling produces very little sensation, sometimes none at all. Some people report feeling a moving sensation during the treatment.

How does it feel?

Most people say that they feel a profound sense of well being during a treatment and often feel euphoric afterwards.

How often do I need it?

This depends entirely on your condition. In the beginning of a course of treatment the appointments need to be frequent. After the condition is under control, once per week may be often enough until you are well. Chronic (long-term) conditions take longer to treat than acute (new) ones.

What other benefits can I expect?

Increased energy, weight control, calming addictions, regulate blood pressure, strengthen the immune system.

What will it cost?

  • Initial consultation (half hour): $30.00
  • Acupuncture: $60.00
  • Facial Renewal Acupuncture: $85.00
  • Bodywork (50 minutes): $70.00

What conditions can be treated with acupuncture?

The World Health Organization approves this list of conditions considered treatable by acupuncture:

  • Infections: Colds, flu, bronchitis, hepatitis
  • Skin Disorders: Eczema, acne, herpes
  • Emotional Issues: Anxiety, depression, insomnia, stress
  • Internal: Asthma, ulcers, colitis, indigestion, hemorrhoids, diarrhea, constipation, hypoglycemia, high blood pressure

  • Urinary and Reproductive: Impotence, infertility, vaginitis, irregular periods, menstrual cramps, morning sickness, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

What is Auriculotherapy

This may be considered the "take-out" form of acupuncture. Tiny beads are taped on acupuncture points in the ears and are left in place to extend the effectiveness of a treatment. Typically, they will stay in place for 3-4 days.

What is Cupping?

This treatment form uses a vacuum created in glass cups, which are placed on the skin. It improves the circulation thereby reducing toxins in the area and activating the lymphatic system.
